BUCS: 100% record for girl's 1sts, Men's 1sts win 12-0

13th November 2013

Making it 4/4 wins on the trot, a MASSIVE win against league leaders, Portsmouth, rocketed TeamSurrey to top of the league! Woman of the match to Captain, Sophie, who won both matches she played.
A second win on the trot for the Men's 1st team, winning 12-0 Vs Roehampton, who were title contenders last year, pushed them higher up the table. Singles were won in two sets but the doubles were a much closer affair, with both going to a final set champ. tiebreak. More scores in soon!

BUCS: Men's 1sts' 1st win of the season!

30th October 2013

The Men's 1st Team, bagged their first win of the season, defeating Reading 10-2, winning in front of voratious home support for Reading! After the doubles, it was 1 a piece, but dominant and at some times, exhilarating performances in singles pulled Team Surrey through.

The girls had another win at home, keeping them in contention for the title.
As for the 2nds, it was a tough day in the office, albeit it a very picturesque office, losing out 10-2 to Royal Holloway. All teams in good positions and massive positive teamwork on court. Keep it up TeamSurrey!

BUCS Matches

23rd October 2013

In the second week of matches, the Men's 2nd Team got off to a solid start with a draw at home to King's College 1sts, with Man of the Match going to the one and only Adam Garrooooood for his 3 set win in singles, coming from 5-0 down in the tie breaker to take the match! After the match, Garrod was asked how he stayed in the match mentally: "I just got involved, lads"
Ladies 1st team had an emphatic win away to Reading 1sts, promoting them to the highly coveted top-of-the-league-we're-havin-a-laugh position. Woman of the match to Emma Knowles for winning both matches. President Katie paid homage to coaches Nick and Josh, with a hint at their mentality in matches "No pain. No gain." 
Men's 1st Team had another tough match, losing 10-2 to newly relegated Portsmouth 1sts. Tom Partridge secured Man of the Match for a "cheeky" guest appearance, winning 7-6 in the decider. 
 

BUCS matches: Wednesday 16th October 2013

21st October 2013

Team Surrey Tennis had their first round of BUCS matches today. Due to the great british weather, Mens 2nd team were unable to play against the University fo Sussex, so this match will be arranged for later in the season. Mens 1st Team had a tough start, with a 10-2 loss to a title chasing Chichester Team. Man of the match was Sam Wallen Russell for playing some inspirational doubles. The Ladies team had a great startwith an 8-4 win against Chichester. Woman of the match goes to Joanna Jump. Well done to all those that played!

Tennis Circus

27th September 2013

Tennis Circus will take place on Wednesday 30 October.

 

All the proceeds will be reinvested into our tennis programme, including an outreach programme and to develop a wheelchair tennis programme at Surrey Sports Park.

 

On the night we will be auctioning off a signed Tim Henman T-shirt, tennis lessons and a one year tennis membership to Surrey Sports Park!

The sessions will be taken by Danny Sapsford and James Auckland along with Nick Ingham and our Surrey Sports Park pros.

Meet the Pros;

 

Danny Sapsford

Danny played on the ATP Tour from 1987-1999, reaching a career high ATP singles ranking of 170 and 83 in Doubles. He represented Great Britain in the Davis Cup from 1990-95. Danny competed in all 4 Grand Slams with his best performance coming at Wimbledon '99 where he made the 3rd Round before losing to eventual champion, Pete Sampras. In 1998, Danny became the Men’s National Singles Champion, and he also won the Doubles Event on 3 separate occasions. Wins during his career include Henman, Rusedski, Korda, Gilbert and Kuerten. After retiring Danny became an LTA National coach, overseeing a squad of boys who won European singles and doubles titles, Grand Slam and ITF World Doubles titles, and junior / senior National singles titles.

 

James Auckland

James was a Davis Cup member during 2006, he is a doubles specialist, and was an occasional partner to Andy Murray.
He reached the 3rd Round at Wimbledon and ranked in the ATP Top 60. James has doubles wins over the Bryan Bro's and Nadal.

COMPETITION ORGANISERS COURSE

27th September 2013

We will be offering a Tennis Competition Organsiers Course for all students on Wednesday 6th November 2013.

 

The course is 3 hours long and at the end of the session you will be prepared to confidently deliver your first competition and assist a club, coach or committee in planning competitions.

 

The course will include;

 

  • Guidance on how to plan and run your competition

  • Competition format guidance and best practise depending on the number of players and their standard

  • Tips to help you to plan your welcome presentation to players and parents and your prize giving presentation

 

When attending you will be given a toolkit to help you start running competitions.

TEAM TRIALS

20 SEPETEMBER, 2013

If you would like to play in the tennis teams this year on Wednesday afternoons, then please come along and try out. Due to our trials being very busy over the last few years, we have split them over several days:

***Mens Trials***

Round 1: Sunday 6th October (14:00-16:00) and Monday 7th October (19:30-21:30)- please attend just one of these sessions.

Round 2 (Invitation only): Sunday 13th October (10:30-12:30)

***Ladies Trials***

Sunday 13th October (10:30-12:30)

Anyone who makes the teams will need to come to Team Practice every Monday evening, 19:30-21:30.

FRESHERS WEEK

September 13, 2013

Congratulations to all those who are coming to University of Surrey in September! For those of you wanting to join the Tennis Club, we have two main events during Freshers Week:

 

Freshers Fayre

Friday 4th October, 12-4pm

 

Come and visit the tennis stand on PATS field to get all the information you need about what the tennis club can offer you. All of the committee will be on hand to answer any questions you might have.

 

Active Freshers Fayre

Saturday 5th October, 12-3pm

 

Come down to Surrey Sports Park and try a bit of tennis- all abilities welcome! Test your speed of serve, be put through your paces by our ball machine, or why not try a bit of Cardio Tennis!

 

Sesssions start on the hour at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm- please bring a racket if you have one!

FRESHERS FEST

March 15, 2013

If you are looking at coming to the University of Surrey in September, Tennis have lots in store for you!

 

Freshers Week is always a very busy time, but make sure you come and visit us during Freshers Fest! On Friday 4th October, all the sports and societies along with other local companies will all have stands at Freshers Fayre. Come and visit the tennis stand to gain all the information you need about what tennis has to offer you- all of our tennis committee will also be on hand to answer any of your questions.

 

Make sure you also come and visit the tennis courts during Freshers Fest on Saturday 5th-Sunday 6th October. We will have our ball machine, speed of serve machine and our coaches running Cardio Tennis throughout the weekend.

 

If you would like to try out for the teams, you will also need to attend our Team Trials. Mens Round 1 Trials are Sunday 6th October (3-5pm) and Monday 7th October (7-9pm)- come down to whatever time suits you best. You will then be notified by email to tell you whether you have made it through to the final round of trials on Thursday 10th October (7-9pm) where there will be a short presentation, Q&A session, tennis drills run by our coaches and some short tie-break style matches.
